DJ and I just spent the entire yesterday driving around and looking through
other people’s stuff- at the u-haul auctions. Apparently if you put your
stuff in a storage space and leave it there for a few months without paying,
they sell your stuff off at an auction to pay for the rent of the space.
They will try to call you to get you to pay for it- but if you have moved or
don’t really care all that much- it’s gone.
We met several interesting people; Christie is a very nice and informative
auction; George was a new comer from Maryland; The auctioneer was very
helpful. There were many others that I didn’t catch the names of- others
referred to some of them as the ‘high bidders’ as they end up getting most
of the better looking stuff.
We started out at 8:30 and didn’t get home until after 10:00; it started out
around 55 degrees with a little drizzle and wind, and ended up at 30 degrees
with some icy wind and no rain. Wonderful weather.
I binged on my low-card diet; three Wendy’s .99 burgers for lunch and four
Taco Bell chili-cheese burritos for dinner [mmm. chili-cheese]. Good news
is that the total cost of meals for me was around $7- we spent a lot more
than that on padlocks. DJ spent about the same; she had more spread out
meals though- Wendy’s, Sonic and Chick Fil-a.
We bought two storage spaces and ended up with three- one was a two-for-one
auction. The best deal was a matched washer-dryer set for $25. Our other
deal was two storage areas of furniture- a desk, dresser, chairs, mattresses
[ugh], and some small tables [and I think an ancient TV] for $25. We have
until December 5th to clear them out, so we are going to hit a few more
auctions over the next few weeks to offset the cost of renting a u-haul
truck.
So today is it off to Roswell for 8:30 for another look around other
people’s abandoned stuff; and another at 10:30- then home to rest.
